1. Protect the LED Before Priming
Before applying any primer, cover the LED with the included plastic protector or a narrow drinking straw. This prevents spray paint from coating the LED surface, which can reduce light output.
-
2. Prime the Main Post
Apply a flat brown spray primer to the main post. Hold the can 8–12 inches away and apply thin, even coats. Allow to dry completely before painting.
-
3. Dry Brush Raw Sienna (Heavy)
Apply a heavy dry brush of raw sienna over the primed post. Load a stiff brush moderately, wipe off excess on a paper towel, and drag across the surface to cover the texture with warm brown tones.
-
4. Dry Brush Raw Sienna + Titanium White (Light)
Mix raw sienna and titanium white in approximately a 60/30 ratio. Apply a lighter dry brush coat over the previous layer to create lighter midtones and bring out finer details.
-
5. Add Burnt Sienna Character Marks
Using a brush with a small amount of burnt sienna, apply random splotchy marks across the post for visual character and variation. This simulates natural wood grain and weathering.
-
6. Prime the Lantern Cover
Apply flat black spray primer to the lantern cover. This dark base is critical for achieving the rich metallic effect that follows.
-
7. Paint the Lantern Cover with Brassy Brass
Apply solid, full coverage of Vallejo Brassy Brass to the lantern cover. Use a standard brush and apply two coats if needed for even coverage. The black primer showing through at edges adds depth.
-
8. Prime the Stone Base
Apply flat black spray primer to the stone base. Allow to dry completely before dry brushing.
-
9. Dry Brush Neutral Gray on the Base
Apply a heavy dry brush of Liquitex Neutral Gray over the base. This picks out the stone texture and creates the appearance of carved stone.
-
10. Highlight the Base with Titanium White
Apply a light highlight dry brush of titanium white over the base to catch the highest points of the stone texture and add visual contrast.
-
11. Optional: Assemble the Diffuser
If you’d like to soften the LED light, apply a small amount of super glue to the inside of the diffuser sleeve, then carefully push it into the bottom of the lantern cover so it slips onto the LED. Press gently and hold for 30 seconds.
